Green Community Projects

Under its Local Governance Program Area in 2005 and 2006, the Green
Community Projects funded small-scale local projects that were determined
by the Institute to be innovative and to further Green values and
issues.

Grants to individuals in this project area were no more than $1000, and resulted from evaluation of simple
proposals.

Proposals were evaluated on the following criteria:

1) Locally based
2) Innovative policy or organizing
3) Alternative institution building
4) Diversity in all its measures

In 2006, our summer round of Community Grants has ended. Deadline for receiving proposals for this cycle was September 7.

One proposal was accepted, a forum to discuss race in America on November 17, focusing on the N-Word. See the report [1].

There is no standard format for proposals, but
please try to keep them no longer than two pages in length. Proposals
should indicate the goal of the project and what the funds will be
spent on. Because the Green Institute is a non-partisan policy
institute, projects cannot be involved in electoral campaigns or
endorse candidates or political parties. All proposals will be examined
to ensure that they meet these legal requirements.

Grant winners will be expected to sign a contract
and to provide a report at the end of the project. We hope to have an
answer on proposals by September 29. A subcommittee of the Green
Institute Board of Directors will be evaluating the proposals. There
will be another round of projects later in the year.

Community Projects in 2005

In 2005, two projects were funded. One was an electoral reform educational effort [2] in Oregon, focusing on Instant Runoff Voting. The second was support to buy
equipment for the Sagebrush Variety Show [3] radio show featuring Green issues in Idaho.
